Toronto's internationally-acclaimed lakeside performance space and cultural park, Harbourfront Centre, was host to Ashkenaz: A Festival of New Yiddish Culture from August 25th, 1997 through to Labour Day September 1st. The Festival featured world-renowned klezmer bands, jazz artists, poets, singers, authors, actors, dancers and others; many of whom were presented in premiere collaborations. As with the last Festival, most of the performances, workshops, demonstrations and participatory events were free of charge. This is the record of the second Ashkenaz festival, and the seed of the next (Ashkenaz '99). Ashkenaz '97 was produced by Nayeh Velt Cultural Initiatives in partnership with the Bloor JCC. If you are interested in participating in Ashkenaz '99, send e-mail to: yonahbook@echo-on.net with your vital statistics, so that a "Call to Artists" can be sent out when ready. "Virtual" Ashkenaz will remain online to continue discussion of New Yiddish Culture. It's also a place to plan the next one. Do join in! RealAudio sound files of festival performances and workshops (as of 9/3/97, these are still being added--do continue to check daily)
