The original brief for this report consisted of a number of questions around the issue of online education. In putting together this preliminary report, I have interpreted the questions as follows:
- Create a context for understanding online education and distance education
- Investigate and show exemplary examples of online education that may be of relevance to HUC
- Investigate at some detail Jewish organizations which are doing online education, or which support/may support online education relevant to HUC.
In addition, I will be adding some discussion of online community-related issues and how they may be relevant/may further HUC's goals in reaching a wider audience more tied to, and more aware of HUC's role in Jewish education. Do e-mail me with comments, observations, and complaints.
In preparing this report, I first went through some obvious resources and created a public page listing them, and reasons why they appeared to be relevant. The page was put together with this HUC report in mind, although I also tried to ensure a sufficiently broad scope so that it could serve the general online community/education community. That page is divided as follows:
My original brief in creating this report is as follows:
- Identify the program's market.
- Assess Jewish educational level of user and desired level - should there be additional or other programs offered?
- Assess depth of content.
- Assess creativity.
- Assess content level: Basic, Intermediate, Advanced.
- Pre-service or in-service training
for student and faculty?
- Describe specific medium of transmission:
email, http, IRC.
- Does any site or program say, "watch for our new ....... in the year .....
How quickly are programs coming online?
- Note the availability of accompanying media packages (audio/visual tapes, books, CDs, etc.).
- Note co-sponsors and any funding sources listed.
- Give examples of good sites and services.
If I have done my job well, this report will provide background and context to answer many of the first questions, will address the question of funding as possible, and will focus on programs that are currently extent or in development.
This report is now public. We'd love it if you would add/view comments/questions, so as to use this as the beginning of a dialogue on online Jewish education.
