Toronto, May 20, 1997... The Ashkenaz Gala takes place on Monday, June 23
at the Ford Centre for the Performing Arts, George Weston Recital Hall.
While the show starts at 8:00pm, guests should arrive at 7:30pm for
unbridled and surprising pre-show entertainment.
The major fundraising event in support of Ashkenaz: A Festival of New
Yiddish Culture (which takes place this year at Harbourfront Centre from
August 25th through to September 1st), the Ashkenaz Gala is a wonderful
celebration of Yiddish culture.
As previously announced by Linda Frum, Chairperson of the Ashkenaz Gala,
the lineup includes internationally acclaimed author Mordecai Richler;
renowned Yiddish violinist Alicia Svigals of the Klezmatics; Canada's own
premiere klezmer band, the Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band; and New York dancer
Neta Pulvermacher with her hilarious solo piece Ma Nishtana (with
Pulvermacher atop a tower of matzos, set to a recording of the traditional
Passover "The Four Questions"). Added to the lineup is San Francisco's
provocative performance artist Sara Felder -- a smash hit at the last
Ashkenaz Festival. Distinguished actor and director Al Waxman acts as
Master of Ceremonies for the evening.
Patrons will be treated to a magical evening of 'New Yiddish' music,
literature, dance and comedy that will surprise and delight with its depth,
power and joy. After the program, guests will enjoy a delicious, deluxe
dessert (kosher) reception, and will have the opportunity to bid on silent
auction items ranging from elegant jewellery and antique silver to valuable
paintings and exotic carpets. All patrons will receive a complimentary copy
of the soon-to-be released book Growing Up Jewish, edited by Rosalie Sharp,
Irving Abella and Edwin Goodman, published by McClelland & Stewart.
Tickets for this outstanding evening are $100. A tax receipt will be issued
for the maximum amount allowable. Tickets are available by calling
Ticketmaster at (416) 872-2222 or in person at the Ford Centre for the
Performing Arts Box Office, 5040 Yonge St.
